Hemp

Hemp (Ōasa, Asa, 麻) - the first thread of humankind.

In Japan, it has been inseparable from both daily life and sacred ritual for more than ten millennia.

With hemp thread we once cut the newborn’s umbilical cord,

clothed the child in kimono patterned with hemp leaves to wish them strength,

bound the hair of bride and groom praying for their longevity and bond.

Because hemp grew without care, it was seen as a divine gift - its fibers are still used for sacred ropes and ritual dress in Shintō, Japan's native faith.

Hemp is harmony: the feeling of being wrapped in nature, the heart softens, gentleness returned, fabric that breathes and dries with ease.

We dream of a time when people once more wrap themselves in this gentle strength, their hearts calmed, their spirits unbounded.

Today we bring hemp back into the light - to weave it into garments of everyday life,

to let it carry the quiet spirit of Japan out into the wide world.
